SUMMARY:Star Theatre Presents\, “Pippin”
DESCRIPTION:There’s magic to do when a prince learns the true meaning of glory\, love and war in Stephen Schwartz’s iconic and unforgettable musical masterpiece.  With an infectiously unforgettable score from four-time Grammy winner\, three-time Oscar winner and musical theatre giant\, Stephen Schwartz\, Pippin is the story of one young man’s journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival\, this updated circus-inspired version of Pippin continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.  Heir to the Frankish throne\, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield\, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father\, King Charlemagne the Great). In the end\, though\, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors\, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day. Pippin’s message is universal and will connect with audiences across the age spectrum.  Rated PG-13. \n\n\nFriday July 11\, 7:30pm \nSaturday July 12\, 7:30pm  \nSunday July 13\, 2:00pm \nFriday July 18\, 7:30pm  \nSaturday July 19\, 2:00pm \n Saturday July 19\, 7:30pm \nSunday July 20\, 2:00pm

SUMMARY:The Psychedelic Furs
DESCRIPTION:+ THE ROMANTICS / ROONEY \nNew wave icons the Psychedelic Furs built a career on mysterious pop songs guided by the world-weary and unmistakable vocals of Richard Butler plus an always-evolving sound that started off as stark post-punk then took detours into synth pop\, dance rock\, and mainstream alternative. Along the way\, they released a classic album that fused the energy of punk with the brightness of new wave (1981’s Talk Talk Talk) and a string of singles highlighted by “Love My Way\,” “Heaven\,” and “Heartbreak Beat” that proved popular and influential. Their classic song “Pretty in Pink” became the inspiration for the film of the same name and others showed up regularly in movies and TV shows. Though the band ran aground in the early ’90s\, they returned a decade later to launch a successful career as a live act\, and with their 2020 album Made of Rain\, proved they could still deliver epic and meaningful records. \nThe Romantics are one of power pop’s success stories. The Detroit combo took their danceable\, British Invasion-influenced sound from tiny clubs in their home town to airwaves and arenas all over the world. “What I Like About You\,” from their self-titled 1980 debut album\, became a hit single and a perennial favorite that helped define their spunky attack\, and 1983’s In Heat spawned “Talking In Your Sleep\,” a lean\, atmospheric number that would rise to the upper reaches of the singles charts. Legal matters kept the band out of the studio through much of the 1990s\, but they remained a hard-working live act and made a rousing return to form with 2003’s 61/49. \nRooney is the primary musical project of singer-songwriter Robert Schwartzman\, evolving from its origin as an American rock band formed by high school friends in Los Angeles. Before Schwartzman decided to continue the project in a different direction\, the band’s most enduring line-up consisted of Schwartzman (lead vocals\, guitar)\, Louie Stephens (keyboards\, piano)\, Taylor Locke (lead guitar\, backing vocals)\, Matthew Winter (bass guitar) and Ned Brower (drums\, backing vocals). The band is named after Ed Rooney\, the principal in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Their music is reminiscent of British Invasion rock and 1980s pop\, and has been compared to The Beatles\, The Cars\, Jellyfish\, Sloan and Queen. They have toured the nation with acts such as Weezer\, The Strokes\, Jane’s Addiction\, Travis\, Keane\, Audioslave\, OK Go\, and Queens of the Stone Age. \nOn the very rare occasion that a support act cancels\, the show will go on as scheduled. No refunds or exchanges. \nEvent details: \n🔹 Doors open: approximately 5:00 p.m. \n🔹 Fair admission: same day admission. \n🔹 Stay updated: Tune in to OC Fair Radio for concert and Fair updates: ocfair.com/radio

SUMMARY:George Thorogood & The Destroyers
DESCRIPTION:There is this magical sweet spot that seems to be created when two genres mix and create something magnificent. Take a pinch of Chuck Berry’s Rock and Roll\, add in a dash of John Lee Hooker’s Blues\, and what you get is the hard-driving and toe-tapping musical mélange that is mastered by George Thorogood and The Destroyers. They were at a sold-out MTelus in Montreal the other night as part of this year’s annual Jazz Festival. There wasn’t very much jazz being played on this night\, but that’s not really what the packed house was looking for anyway. \nThey wanted some down-and-dirty rock and roll so that they could shake\, rattle and roll the night away. Played to the stage by Barry McGuire’s classic “Eve of Destruction\,” the band is then introduced wrestling style as “World Champions of Rock and Roll!” It didn’t take much more than that to get everyone up in the gallery to join their fellow rock fans on the floor by jumping to their feet. \nOpening the evening was Texas blues rocker Alastair Greene. He hit the stage in his best Texas outlaw gear\, though the only gun he was slinging was a mean electric guitar. His set was terribly short\, considering that he came out and immediately caught everyone’s attention with some slick guitar work. He may have been a rookie to the city\, but Alastair Greene has been rocking crowds for almost 20 years. The majority of his set came from his tenth album\, Standing Out Loud\, which was released last year. Hopefully\, he will be back soon and be able to play even more of his awesome songs. \n \n\n\nGetting back to our headliner\, George Thorogood hasn’t lost any of his energy\, or good nature\, despite being 75. I hope to have that much energy when I get to that point. He opened his set with ”Rock Party\,” a rather appropriate choice as that was exactly what we were all there for. A rock party for the ages. Even the venue got in on the fun\, offering up a special one bourbon\, one scotch and one beer trio for 23 dollars. That song\, of course\, got a huge reaction\, but the loudest cheer of the night had to be the opening riff of “Bad To The Bone.” The between-song banter was great as well as George was obviously having a great time. \nThe love-in between artist and crowd lasted all the way to the final notes. The Montreal fans had been waiting seven years since George Thorogood & The Destroyers last visited. Both ‘The Plague’ and other medical issues had kept George away\, but he was back\, and the crowd lined the street waiting to get in. There were more than a few disappointed fans who tried to buy some last-minute tickets while I was picking up my pass. \n \n\n\nOnce inside the building\, George Thorogood & The Destroyers made everyone forget the long wait. They absolutely lived up to their ‘Baddest Band In The World’ billing. George Thorogood & The Destroyers will be out there on tour until mid-August. Don’t miss your chance to get rocked by The World Champions of Rock and Roll when they come to a town near you.
