SUMMARY:“Matinees on the Mountain”
DESCRIPTION:…screening Early Astronomical Films \nMount Wilson Observatory (MWO)—Southern California’s esteemed home to several of the most groundbreaking astronomical discoveries in history—presents the fourth “Matinees on the Mountain” screening on Saturday\, August 23\, 2025 at 3:00pm. \nThe Observatory\, along with Los Angeles Filmforum\, presents “Envisioning the Skies: A Short History of Astronomical Films\,” a program of early scientific films exploring how cinema first attempted to understand and visualize the cosmos. Curated by L.A. Filmforum’s Jane de Almeida\, Adam Hyman\, and Jheanelle Brown\, the program explores how astronomy and image‑making have shaped one another from the 19th century to the present-day. From Hanns Walter Kornblum and Ernst Krieger’s “Our Heavenly Bodies\,” to Bernard Lyot’s solar footage\, to Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos.” these films reveal how techniques from sequential photography to digital simulation have transformed how we see\, teach\, and imagine the universe. \nMWO’s new film series—happening on select Saturday afternoons this season—will take place in its 256-seat auditorium\, screening classic science fiction\, early scientific\, vintage silent films\, and even a few family-friendly surprises. Moviegoers can enjoy lunch at the Cosmic Cafe or picnic on the grounds\, explore the Observatory’s rich history\, and then settle in for a unique cinematic experience 1-mile above the City of Los Angeles. Tickets are priced at $20 for general admission and $15 for children under 12. For more information and tickets\, please visit: www.mtwilson.edu/events/movie082325

SUMMARY:Jack Van Cleaf\, Joelton Mayfield
DESCRIPTION:This is a 21+ event w/ valid ID at Soda Bar – San Diego. \nJack Van Cleaf was still an independent artist when “Rattlesnake” became a viral hit in 2023\, earning praise from songwriters like Noah Kahan (who hand-picked Jack as the opening act on his sold-out Stick Season Tour) and Zach Bryan (who began covering \nthe song online). For Jack\, it felt like a pivotal moment in a career that had been building since his teenage years. \n“This album is all about the vertigo of growing up\,” says Jack\, who makes his Dualtone Records debut with the sophomore release JVC. “It’s about re-defining and re-understanding yourself.” JVC does more than plant its flag halfway between the worlds of indie rock and Gen Z folk. It also asks big questions about home and identity. Years after penning his first song as a high school freshman in San Diego\, he headed east to Nashville\, where he studied songwriting at Belmont University and released his debut album\, Fruit from the Trees\, after graduation. “I met many of my closest friends during my very first week at Belmont\,” says Jack about his formative years in Music City. \n“All talented artists in their own right\, they went on to help me make my first record everything that it is\, and have remained my most trusted collaborators to this day.” “Rattlesnake\,” with its introspective lyrics and atmospheric acoustics\, earned him a spot on Spotify’s 2024 Best New Artist list with tastemaker playlist “juniper\,” but nothing – not even the praise of his heroes – could calm the existential freakout he experienced as a 20something thrust into adulthood. \n“I was shell-shocked\,” he remembers. “I’d spent my whole life being told what to do every single day\, and I always dreamed about growing up to be my own boss. Then graduation came\, and I got what I wanted… but I realized I had no idea how to function on a day-to-day basis.” \nJVC was born during that period of anxiety\, self-examination\, and newfound freedom. It’s a sharply-written record that measures the long\, winding road from past to present. Sometimes that road is literal\, with songs like “Shouldn’t Have Gone to L.A.” finding Jack in transit\, caught between locations without a clear anchor\, his heart in search of a place to land. Elsewhere\, the album traffics in metaphor\, whether Jack is singing about the road to ruin in “Thinkin’ About It” (a candid look at suicidal ideation\, laced \nwith resonator and acoustic guitars) or tracing the similarities between romantic obsession and substance abuse with the countryfied “Using You.” \n\n\n\n\nThis is a 21+ event\n\n\nPresented by Soda.\n\n\n\n$\n\nYou can get a refund if: \n\nIt’s within 24 hours of buying tickets\nThis event is rescheduled or cancelled

SUMMARY:Babe Rainbow
DESCRIPTION:Babe Rainbow are a stoner pop band from Australia noted for their boogie psychedelia and throwback surf cult imagery. \n\nFormed 2015 in Rainbow Bay by kiosk lurkers Jack Crowther aka Cool Breeze  Angus Dowling and Elliot O’Reilly. At a time the three worked for local grower John Cutts in Duranbah NSW near tropical fruit world. John and the guys were cranking out the kale way before it was cool. “We’ve seen plenty of vegetables go in and out of fashion” says Angus. \n\nInitially rooted in 60’s psych and 70’s French surf pop the Babe’s musical style has evolved through their career exploring elements of woodland bop and disco\, dub and more recently dance and international groove\, yet has maintained an Aquarian quality built of Dowling’s spacemen singing style and Cool Breeze’s chiming effects-based guitar sounds. \n\nBabe wrote and recorded their first release “The Babe Rainbow EP” in a 2nd hand bookstore in Murwillumbah which was soon picked up by national broadcaster triple J and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard label Flightless Records. In 2017 they released their debut album produced by Stu Mackenzie and smacked out support tours with King Gizzard\, Allah Las\, Tomorrows Tulips\, and French synth wave band La Femme internationally. \n\nThe debut Babe Rainbow album was signed to 30th Century / Columbia. The “Double Rainbow” (2018) followed and then “Today” (2019). Wollongong surfer Miles Myjavec joined on drums around this time. Babe Rainbow now own all their masters and future releases including album four ‘Changing Colours’ which was the first on the bands own label EUREKA! Music through AWAL. \n\nBabe Rainbow is powered by Hobie swallowtails

SUMMARY:WesGhost - CAN WE GO BACK TO SLEEP' TOUR
DESCRIPTION:WesGhost blends 2000s pop-punk\, alternative\, and hip-hop into a sound that simultaneously feels both nostalgic and forward-pushing. Hidden by his signature balaclava\, he’s cultivated a tight-knit fanbase—the WesGhost Collective— drawn to the raw vulnerability and distorted energy pulsing through every release. His 2024 mixtape DON’T WORRY\, I’LL BE FINE and 2025’s AM I DREAMING? build out a world of emotional unrest and cathartic release\, earning co-signs from the likes of blackbear and Diplo along the way. Now gearing up for his second US headline tour\, WesGhost continues to blur genre lines while anchoring everything in community\, intensity\, and feeling.
