SUMMARY:Melanie Fiona
DESCRIPTION:Don’t ask her to define it. Singer/songwriter Melanie Fiona’s debut album The Bridge reveals a sweet push-and-pull between countless elements of herself. At once Canadian and Caribbean\, strong and sexy\, contemplative and joyous\, blending the sounds of pop and soul. Despite the many moods and musings of Melanie Fiona’s debut\, there is one defining element. The girl’s got soul.”The album is called The Bridge\,” enthuses Fiona. “It crosses the barriers between ethnicities\, genres\, age groups\, and genders. It can’t be defined as just one thing. It’s got a soul that’s something old\, yet something new.” The album reflects the duality that asserts itself in Melanie Fiona’s own exuberant personality. Flirting with the traditions of classic soul from artists like Sam Cooke\, Nat King Cole and Gladys Knight\, the songs also pack the punch\, and authenticity of modern music. United by a singular passion\, Melanie Fiona’s sound bridges past and present with an artistic and consistent blending of classic soul samples. It’s all held together by a unique quality\, something that is innately her\, much like the other artists she mentions as influences: Bob Marley\, Sade\, and Patsy Cline.Born to Guyanese immigrant parents and growing up in a music-filled house in the inner city of Toronto\, Fiona knew from the very beginning that music is what moves her. “My mother\, who shares my love for music\, played everything from The Ronettes to Whitney Houston around the house as I grew up. My father would let me sit on the stage while he rehearsed with his band as a guitarist. “That strong sense of family translates to the team she’s now surrounded herself with\, including Carmen Murray and Michael Michel of Title 9 Productions and managers Jay Brown and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith of Roc Nation “I am so fortunate that I had people to educate me and show me that development as to what it really is to be an artist.”Though Fiona had been writing her own songs for years\, the introduction of songwriter Andrea Martin\, would prove seminal for The Bridge. “When I met Andrea\, it was an instant connection\,” she explains. “We developed this very personal working relationship where we were both inspired by each other.” Sharing each other’s life experiences\, they collaborated on some of the defining songs in the collection. Other producers on the album include UK producers Future Cut\, Florida’s Vada Nobles\, LA’s The Stereotypes\, NYC’s J. Phoenix\, Peter Wade\, and Salaam Remi\, Andrew Wyatt\, Rob Fusari\, and Angela Hunte. Fiona also shows off her Caribbean roots on Reggae Gold 2008\, with Supa Dups’ “Somebody Come Get Me”.”This experience will never happen for me again\,” she muses. “I’ll never be a new artist again. I’ll never be a complete and utter student of the game.” Whatever may come when The Bridge releases on Steve Rifkind’s SRC/ Motown Universal Records in Spring 2009\, Fiona is poised and ready. “I still live humbly out of a suitcase\, and I appreciate the smallest things in life\, and I want people to feel that. I have an opportunity to be on a stage\, but I want my listeners to know that I’m just like them.”

SUMMARY:TOKiMONSTA
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY-nominated producer TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee) has charted a fascinating career over the past decade. She is one of the most revered music producers as one of the pioneers of the seminal 2010 era “L.A. Beat Scene.” As a world-class performer\, she ranks as one of the Top 100 DJs worldwide (DJ Mag) and has performed at nearly every major festival worldwide. From her 2010 debut album Midnight Menu to her most recent 2020 album Oasis Nocturno\, her entire discography has drawn critical praise from NPR\, BBC\, LA Times\, NY Times\, DJ Mag\, Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, Pitchfork and more. As it stands\, her list of collaborators includes Anderson .Paak\, EARTHGANG\, Ryuichi Sakamoto\, Yuna\, ZHU\, Bibi Bourelly\, The Drums — and up-and-coming artists she seeks out to mentor. With over 400 million streams and counting\, she remains in demand having remixed the likes of David Bowie\, Sia\, Beck\, Duran Duran\, Portugal the Man\, Disclosure\, ODESZA and Ólafur Arnalds. \n  \nFollowing her second album Half Shadows\, TOKiMONSTA established and began releasing on her own label Young Art Records. Minialbums\, Desiderium and FOVERE both featured artist Anderson .Paak and some of her most belovedsongs to date. After anchoring her label with her GRAMMY nomination\, Young Art has continued to soar with notable releases being Rochelle Jordan’s Juno Award-nominated album Play with the Changes featuring production by KAYTRANADA\, Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum\, and critically acclaimed album Svengali by Cakes da Killa (rated 4/5 stars by The Guardian). \n  \nAt the end of 2015\, her career temporarily came to a halt after being diagnosed with a rare and fatal cerebral vascular disease known as Moyamoya. After undergoing two consecutive brain surgeries\, TOKiMONSTA was left with acute aphasia\, meaning she could no longer verbally communicate. She soon discovered she had also lost the ability to comprehend the thing most important to her\, music. Through perseverance and healing\, her cognitive and creative faculties returned. Her Moyamoya journey gained more wide-spread attention after starring in the first season finale of the Netflix series Vox\, Explained. \n  \nAfter her recuperation\, she made a triumphant comeback with a jaw-dropping performance at Coachella and a new body of work\, her critically acclaimed album\, Lune Rouge. Her third full-length album was nominated for ‘Electronic Album of the Year’ by the Recording Academy at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards. More than just an accolade\, her nomination was an astounding achievement as she was the first Asian American producer and first female producer ever nominated in the category. \n  \n2020 brought a deeper evolution as TOKiMONSTA shared her fourth full-length album\, Oasis Nocturno. It highlighted her effortless flow between the stylings of house\, soul and hip-hop. Following her album\, her single “The Flower Blooms” was a focus track on Netflix’s Squid Game (Let’s Play) EP. Right after the release of her official remix for David Bowie’s 1975 hit “Golden Years\,” she went on to win Best Remix from DJ Mag for her remix of Sia and Neneh Cherry’s “Manchild.” Most recently\, she released “Eats The Tale” on Young Art Records\, a genre-bending track with label-mate Rochelle Jordan. The single was showcased in Times Square NYC by Spotify for New Music Friday. The rest of 2023 has her continuing her Booms & Blooms tour globally and preparing for more new music in 2024. \n  \nTOKi has now entered the world of tech\, having co-founded a music tech startup by the name of Sona. The aim of Sona is to democratize music streaming for artists in a world where the pay per stream is not adequate for a musician’s cost of living. The protocol and platform will reconstruct the scaffolding of music streaming so that audiences still have access to all the music they desire\, while allowing artist’s payout to equate to what they truly deserve. After a successful seed round in 2022\, the company is aiming to launch late 2023.

SUMMARY:Latin History For Morons
DESCRIPTION:Written by John Leguizamo \n  \nLatin History for Morons is a hilarious and insightful exploration inspired by the glaring absence of Latinos in American history textbooks. In this uproarious comedy\, John Leguizamo embarks on a frenetic quest to uncover a Latin hero for his son’s school project. With his signature comedic flair\, he delivers a whirlwind recap of the Aztec Empire and shines a light on the unsung Latin patriots of the Revolutionary War and beyond\, distilling three thousand years of history—from the Mayans to Pitbull—into one hundred and ten irreverent and uncensored minutes that are both entertaining and enlightening. \n  \n“We could not be more excited to bring San Diego legend Herbert Siguena to the Brooks Theatre this winter with this hilarious show\,” says Goodman. “As a founding member of Culture Clash\, Herb has amazing comedic chops\, and he has several one-person shows on his resume that he has written and performed in all over the country. We think his interpretation of John Leguizamo’s work will delight Oceanside audiences – and everyone else too!” \n  \nOTC’s production of Latin History for Morons marks the first staging in San Diego outside of Leguizamo’s original touring production. Previously\, the show made its local debut at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2016\, followed by a one-night-only performance at the San Diego Civic Theatre in 2019. \n  \nOTC presents Latin History for Morons from May 23 to June 8 at the Brooks Theater (217 N Coast Hwy\, Oceanside\, CA). Inspired by the glaring absence of Latinos in American history textbooks\, this hilarious and insightful show follows the journey of a father as he seeks a Latin hero for his son’s school project. Originally created by John Leguizamo\, the production takes audiences on a whirlwind tour of 3\,000 years of history—from the Aztec Empire to modern icons—with humor and heart. May 23 – June 8\, 8 PM \n  \nDisclaimer: Latin History for Morons contains mature themes\, strong language\, and irreverent humor and is recommended for mature audiences.

\nFollowing her second album Half Shadows\, TOKiMONSTA established and began releasing on her own label Young Art Records. \nAt the end of 2015\, her career temporarily came to a halt after being diagnosed with a rare and fatal cerebral vascular disease known as Moyamoya. \nAfter her recuperation\, she made a triumphant comeback with a jaw-dropping performance at Coachella and a new body of work\, her critically acclaimed album\, Lune Rouge. Her third full-length album was nominated for ‘Electronic Album of the Year’ by the Recording Academy at the 2019 GRAMMY Awards. More than just an accolade\, her nomination was an astounding achievement as she was the first Asian American producer and first female producer ever nominated in the category. \n2020 brought a deeper evolution as TOKiMONSTA shared her fourth full-length album\, Oasis Nocturno. \nTOKi has now entered the world of tech\, having co-founded a music tech startup by the name of Sona.

SUMMARY:Hauser
DESCRIPTION:About \n\n\nSince that fateful moment when he decided to create a new\, musical experience out of the long and established traditions of classical\, pop and rock music\, HAUSER has been playing arena concerts all over the world\, defying the conventions of the established music business. From his now iconic rendition of “Smooth Criminal\,” the song that launched him as an internet sensation\, to when he was established as the founding member of the duo 2Cellos\, he has captured the hearts and minds of millions. \nHAUSER’S performance style may only be described as electric; a unique pairing of cello pyrotechnics that align beauty\, elegance and true rock muscle. Fueled by a repertoire base that is as wide and expansive as Lady Gaga is from Tchaikovsky or Shakira is from Shostakovich\, HAUSER is the dynamic cellist performing all of it and taking the world by storm — for what other classically trained cellist can say they have toured with Elton John? \nWhether you find him collaborating with other artistic legends\, like Andrea Bocelli or the Red Hot Chili Peppers\, or\, appearing in his own\, stunning music video series\, Alone Together\, which features performances from his Billboard chart topping album CLASSIC\, HAUSER consistently pushes the limits of his cello and music-making. He went on to repeat that Billboard success with the release of his second album in the series with CLASSIC II.  He is a phenomenon that is one part virtuoso and the other\, that of sheer\, animal magnetism. For HAUSER’s fans\, perhaps it is simply his ability to unify generations of music lovers. \nHAUSER is a rockstar with a cello…and this is only the beginning. \nPlease note: this is a rental event of The Rady Shell\, presented by Live Nation; the San Diego Symphony does not appear on this program. \n\n\nPre-Paid Parking \n\n\nAce Parking has provided a DEDICATED PARKING PURCHASE PAGE for this event.

SUMMARY:Mach-Hommy
DESCRIPTION:Mach-Hommy (born June 21) is an enigmatic Haitian-American emcee from Newark\, New Jersey. \n  \nAlthough Mach began rapping at the age of thirteen\, freestyling over Raekwon’s “Verbal Intercourse\,” his earliest known work can be found on the 2004 mixtape titled Goon Grizzle. Through his early career\, Mach founded the music recording progress to be an “unhealthy” environment and thought of going into the filmmaking industry instead\, but thanks to the encouragement of longtime friend Westside Gunn\, he returned to rapping in the early 2010s. \n  \nAlmost a decade later in 2013\, he released a handful of EPs and a debut studio album titled F.Y.I.\, the project includes production from frequent collaborator August Fanon and originally surfaced on Soundcloud. F.Y.I is available on his website in an updated Digitally Remastered format. \n  \nIn recent years\, Mach infamously began to self-release his music\, first on Instagram and later on Bandcamp\, for hundreds of dollars per physical copy. His 2016 release H.B.O. (Haitian Body Odor)\, his first under the Griselda Records imprint\, was made available with the limited release of 187 physical CD’s\, each sold for $300 through Instagram\, but has since made public to streaming platforms years later. He has frequently collaborated with producers Earl Sweatshirt\, Knxwledge\, The Alchemist\, Camoflauge Monk\, SadhuGold and August Fanon and rappers such as Tha God Fahim\, JuJu Gotti\, and many more. \n  \nMach-Hommy would soon earn the attention to the mainstream media thanks to the release of his May 2021 album\, Pray for Haiti\, his second release under the Griselda imprint. The album saw a commercial success\, with artists such as Drake catching the attention of the artist. From there\, Hommy has since gained a cult following as a result to his work ethic and elusiveness and would continue to release a slew of projects\, either released through all platforms and or released through his website for hundreds or thousands of dollars. \n  \nMach-Hommy Lyrics\, Songs\, and Albums | Genius

DESCRIPTION:Join OMA’s Artist Alliance at Sparks Gallery for the reception of Elemental on Sunday\, May 25\, from 5–8pm. OMA’s Artist Alliance is thrilled to present 38 artworks in their third exhibition at Sparks Gallery in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter downtown. Selected by juror Sonya Sparks\, many of the artworks are loosely themed to the title\, Elemental\, work that explores the vibrancy and vitality of the core elements—earth\, air\, fire\, and water—that shape the world around us. The exhibition aims to evoke the raw\, powerful essence of these elements\, revealing their interconnectedness with life and the environment. The Elemental theme highlights how these fundamental components permeate our daily existence\, inspire creativity\, and foster growth\, yet also have the capacity for destruction and transformation.

SUMMARY:Latin History For Morons
DESCRIPTION:Written by John Leguizamo \nLatin History for Morons is a hilarious and insightful exploration inspired by the glaring absence of Latinos in American history textbooks. \n“We could not be more excited to bring San Diego legend Herbert Siguena to the Brooks Theatre this winter with this hilarious show\,” says Goodman. “As a founding member of Culture Clash\, Herb has amazing comedic chops\, and he has several one-person shows on his resume that he has written and performed in all over the country. We think his interpretation of John Leguizamo’s work will delight Oceanside audiences – and everyone else too!” \nOTC’s production of Latin History for Morons marks the first staging in San Diego outside of Leguizamo’s original touring production. Previously\, the show made its local debut at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2016\, followed by a one-night-only performance at the San Diego Civic Theatre in 2019. \nOTC presents Latin History for Morons from May 23 to June 8 at the Brooks Theater (217 N Coast Hwy\, Oceanside\, CA). May 23 – June 8\, 8 PM \nDisclaimer: Latin History for Morons contains mature themes\, strong language\, and irreverent humor and is recommended for mature audiences.
