SUMMARY:The Psychedelic Furs & the Jesus and Mary Chain
DESCRIPTION:…with Special Guest FRANKIE ROSE!\n\n\nAbout \n\n\nThe Psychedelic Furs and The Jesus and Mary Chain bring their distinctive British rock to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. \nThe Psychedelic Furs may not have invented rock & roll per se\, but their influence since arriving on the post-punk scorched-earth landscape four decades ago has reverberated and resonated among all those who cherish the sweet-and-sour spot where rawness and romanticism meet. Born out of the UK post-punk scene and led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler and his bass-wielding brother Tim\, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on college and alternative radio\, scoring a flurry of major hits with “Love My Way\,” “Pretty in Pink\,” “Heaven\,” “The Ghost in You” and “Heartbreak Beat”. \nOne of the most influential bands of their generation and beyond\, The Jesus and Mary Chain mark their 40th anniversary in 2024 with a new album\, Glasgow Eyes. Released on March 8 by Fuzz Club and distributed worldwide by Cooking Vinyl\, this is the band’s first studio album since Damage and Joy (2017).

SUMMARY:Green Day's American Idiot
DESCRIPTION:ARTISTIC DIRECTOR SNEHAL DESAI’S DIRECTORIAL DEBUT AT THE MARK TAPER FORUM \nSlinging razor guitars\, thundering drums\, and an anti-hero named Johnny. Not the prelude of typical entries in the canon of musical theatre. But these elements herald a groundbreaking American musical all the same: with the burning passion of characters who yearn for something more\, songs bursting with emotion\, and a story that dares you to feel and celebrate and hope. \nThe music of Green Day and the lyrics of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong captured the zeitgeist of a generation with its Grammy Award®-winning multi-platinum album\, which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. American Idiot puts those raw emotions front and center in a highly theatrical and thoroughly satisfying rock opera that burns up the stage. \nThis groundbreaking\, new production\, directed by Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Snehal Desai\, and produced in collaboration with Deaf West Theatre\, features an ensemble of both Deaf and hearing actors\, and is performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and spoken English. CTG and Deaf West have a long history of bold and exciting collaborations\, including Pippin\, Sleeping Beauty Wakes\, and Big River—which went on to have an acclaimed run on Broadway. \nThrough powerful performances and immersive staging\, the show explores themes of identity and rebellion while amplifying the voices of Deaf and multi-cultural communities. With nods to contemporary culture\, this electrifying interpretation pushes boundaries and celebrates the diversity of human experience. Join us for a bold and reimagined take on a modern-day classic like you’ve never seen—or heard—before. \n\n\n \n\n\nTo kick-off my first season\, I am excited to make my CTG directorial debut at the Taper with a new take on Green Day’s American Idiot. This explosive musical will take on a whole new meaning when we join forces with our friends at Deaf West Theatre\, for the fourth time in our history\, to tell this punk rock and wholly American musical tale in both English and American Sign Language. Pair that with the timing of what is sure to be a memorable election year\, we have the makings of what truly great theatre should be: a show that is timely\, resonant\, boundary-pushing\, inclusive\, and electrifying. \n—Snehal Desai\, Artistic Director\, Center Theatre Group

SUMMARY:Día de Los Muertos with Dudamel
DESCRIPTION:About this Performance\nGustavo Dudamel leads a festive exploration of Latin American music for Día de los Muertos with Villa-Lobos’ progressive tour de force and Gabriela Ortiz’s 2019 Yanga. Her work for orchestra\, chorus\, and percussion ensemble is characterized by its use of African instruments and colorful\, multilayered rhythms. Ortiz says\, “[Yanga] speaks to the greatness of humanity when in search of equality and the universal right to enjoy freedom to the fullest.” Revueltas’ film score La noche de los Mayas digs deeper into Mexico’s ancient culture brought into conversation with the modern world\, bolting through thunderous\, dynamic rhythms and a flute interlude based on a traditional Yucatan evening song. Within the music is what poet Octavio Paz describes as Revueltas’ “deep-felt but also joyful concern for man.” \nThis performance is generously supported by the Frank Gehry Fund for Creativity.

SUMMARY:Glory to Glory (A Revival For Spiritual and Devotional Art)
DESCRIPTION:Eldorado Ballroom\nCurated by Solange Knowles for Saint Heron \nSun / Oct 13\, 2024 – 7:30PM \nFeaturing performances by The GMWA Women Of Worship Choir\, organist Dominique Johnson featuring Moses Sumney\, and the choral and piano works of Mary Lou Williams performed by Artina McCain and choir conducted by Malcolm J. Merriweather \nAbout this Performance\nHonoring artists who channel their musical crafts into the realms of faith and profound spiritual experience\, this program venerates artists who have reimagined Black devotion and praise through various expressions in spiritual music. Their work breathes new life into sacred traditions\, blending contemporary elements with deep-rooted spirituality. \nThe evening will also highlight the spiritual choral compositions of the late Mary Lou Williams\, a renowned jazz pianist\, arranger\, and composer who worked with legends such as Duke Ellington and mentored jazz icons including Thelonious Monk\, Charlie Parker\, and Miles Davis. After a three-year hiatus and hundreds of compositions\, Williams returned to music with a deepened Catholic faith\, creating the religious Mass Black Christ of the Andes and continuing to blend sacred music with contemporary influences. The New York Philharmonic’s Choral Conductor\, Malcolm J. Merriweather\, will guide a choir through these esteemed works\, while concert pianist Artina McCain will perform a selection of Williams’ spiritual piano pieces. \nChicago-native organist and keyboardist Dominique Johnson will guide the audience through a selection of gospel pieces on Walt Disney Concert Hall’s impressive 6\,134-pipe organ. Renowned for having the most-watched Hammond organ video on YouTube\, Johnson will showcase the organ’s historical role in worship and praise with a powerful performance. This set will feature a special vocal performance by singer-songwriter Moses Sumney. Sumney\, who was raised in the church by two pastor parents\, demonstrates the duplicity in spiritual devotion through songwriting and performance. The artist frequently uses biblical references in his lyrics across his two albums and centers anointment in his performance. \nCelebrating the innovation of contemporary choirs\, the GMWA Women Of Worship Choir (The Birmingham Chapter) will lead the Eldorado Ballroom through a powerful session of praise and worship\, featuring the iconic gospel anthem “Order My Steps.” Composed in 1991 by Glenn Edward Burleigh\, this song blends classical and operatic elements with the rich traditions of blues\, jazz\, and gospel. The GMWA Women Of Worship’s recording of the song achieved remarkable success\, staying on Billboard Magazine’s Gospel Music chart for ninety-four consecutive weeks. \n“Glory to Glory (A Revival for Spiritual and Devotional Art)” honors and celebrates these artists’ commitment to both their faith and their craft\, blending tribute and ministry in a powerful homage. \n\nSun / Oct 13\, 2024 – 7:30PM

SUMMARY:OMAR APOLLO
DESCRIPTION:Traversing the bounds of genre and language in his songs\, Omar Apollo captures the adventurous spirit that this multi-hyphenate moment in pop demands. The singer-songwriter’s fluid musical flair\, coupled with his soul-baring balladry\, has garnered him a number of industry accolades: including a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist and two Latin GRAMMY nominations for Record of the Year and Best Alternative Song (“Te Olvidaste\,” with C. Tangana). With the release of Ivory\, Apollo’s eclectic 2022 debut\, his hit single “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me at All)” was certified platinum and became his first showing on the Billboard Hot 100. After selling out his accompanying headline tour\, and playing arenas with SZA\, Billie Eilish and Daniel Caesar\, Apollo is now prepared to release his highly-anticipated sophomore album\, God Said No\, June 28th 2024. \nBorn in Hobart\, IN to Mexican immigrant parents\, Apollo made the most of his outcast status by learning guitar and studying the works of Prince. Released independently and written in Spanglish\, his 2018 EP Stereo\, followed by 2019’s Friends\, scored him a deal with Warner Records in 2019. The deal yielded two more projects: 2020’s Apolonio and 2023’s Live for Me. Blending techniques he learned from R&B\, indie rock and Latin music\, Apollo continued to flex his versatility in sensational live performances\, including on Good Morning America\, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon\, NPR’s Tiny Desk series and Coachella. Omar Apollo is a true visionary\, whose one-of-a-kind pop synthesis unites listeners from all walks of life in a shared passion for rhythm and soul. \nPlease note: this is a rental event of The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park\, presented by Live Nation; the San Diego Symphony does not appear on this concert; gates will open at 5:30pm to the ticketed general public.
