The fourth iteration of the event was again set to raise awareness and funds for mental health and suicide prevention. “It takes hundreds of hours from dozens of musicians\, technicians and partners to produce Above Ground\,” says manager Rick Canny\, who co-founded the organization in 2018 with Navarro and Morrison. “Dave\, Billy and I know that at this time there is a much greater use of the team’s collective energy\, time\, and attention. We will have Above Ground 4 later this year. But right now\, the focus is on the immediate needs of friends\, our extended families\, and the community at large. We would like to thank our partners MusiCares\, Goldenvoice\, CenterStaging\, and Capital Funding Group for supporting us in this decision.” This year’s event was set to highlight the groundbreaking self-titled debuts by the New York Dolls (1973) and The Cars (1978) and was scheduled so that performers coming in for the Grammy Awards could participate. DESCRIPTION:Babe Rainbow are a stoner pop band from Australia noted for their boogie psychedelia and throwback surf cult imagery. \n\nFormed 2015 in Rainbow Bay by kiosk lurkers Jack Crowther aka Cool Breeze  Angus Dowling and Elliot O’Reilly. At a time the three worked for local grower John Cutts in Duranbah NSW near tropical fruit world. John and the guys were cranking out the kale way before it was cool. “We’ve seen plenty of vegetables go in and out of fashion” says Angus. \n\nInitially rooted in 60’s psych and 70’s French surf pop the Babe’s musical style has evolved through their career exploring elements of woodland bop and disco\, dub and more recently dance and international groove\, yet has maintained an Aquarian quality built of Dowling’s spacemen singing style and Cool Breeze’s chiming effects-based guitar sounds. \n\nBabe wrote and recorded their first release “The Babe Rainbow EP” in a 2nd hand bookstore in Murwillumbah which was soon picked up by national broadcaster triple J and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard label Flightless Records. In 2017 they released their debut album produced by Stu Mackenzie and smacked out support tours with King Gizzard\, Allah Las\, Tomorrows Tulips\, and French synth wave band La Femme internationally. \n\nThe debut Babe Rainbow album was signed to 30th Century / Columbia. The “Double Rainbow” (2018) followed and then “Today” (2019). Wollongong surfer Miles Myjavec joined on drums around this time. Babe Rainbow now own all their masters and future releases including album four ‘Changing Colours’ which was the first on the bands own label EUREKA! Pop the cork on some Magic City Hippies. \nMCH initially floated onto the scene as Robby Hunter Band\, yet once their album titled Magic City Hippies dropped\, it became clear they had accidentally found their identity through an album title. Renamed in 2015 as Magic City Hippies\, the Miami boys tasked themselves with marrying the funk sweat of a mid-afternoon sail with the syncopated shoulder shimmy of a late night out. They quickly gathered steam and took to gracing stages across the planet\, from packed night clubs\, to sold out concert halls\, to earning performances at Bonnaroo\, Austin City Limits\, and Lollapalooza\, Magic City Hippies cater to those simply looking to escape with a welcoming\, never-haughty\, yet delightfully naughty\, thwap.  \nTheir Hippie Castle EP (2015) was just the tip of the proverbial ice cube in a cocktail glass of hippie sass. It mixed pool-side melodies and three day weekend grooves with a soulful\, upbeat\, vacation-heavy inflection of what can only be described as their own brand of musically casual psych-pop. Modern Animal (2019) brought MCH beachside\, adding even more sultry swank to an already damp pair of chinos. A few years later\, Water Your Garden (2022) brought the world out of a socially isolated pandemic\, with a brilliantly shimmering and joyous celebration of dancing on our own\, yet now together.  \nWhile the studio albums have each received both fan and critical acclaim\, their engaging and unapologetically energetic live show takes even the most dance-stubborn attendee and persuades a sort of hypnotically voluntary participation.
