Shared traits—Struggles become opportunities

The roads that each of our 2026 SoCal Motivational Minds have navigated exposed personal challenges and triumphs—either with the world watching or soon to tune in. Being adept at converting their struggles into opportunities and deciding to open up about the hard stuff was the catalyst that got these Southern Californian phenoms noticed.

Dr. Mindy Pelz entered my consciousness in 2024. However, unlike Sean Kanan and David Meltzer, I have not had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Mindy in person. Instead, I have participated in a few of her hosted virtual meetings. Dr. Mindy is passionate about a health and lifestyle practice I dabbled in as a teen and began recommitting to in my adult years. Her motivational style is connected to the science of the body and its ability to correct what ails it.

Sean Kanan and David Meltzer chose to be candid about their personal struggles and their powerful messages inspired me. Their outreach to others is a hallmark of their daily lives. Since I’ve had an opportunity to meet and interact with both, I thought it was important to share their profiles. Of course, many already know them. My hope is that others may become equally inspired by learning about or rediscovering them with this feature.

Background: Business — Entrepreneur | Author | Philanthropist
Motivational Focus: Entrepreneurial & Spiritual Growth

Chairman of the Napoleon Hill Institute

In the fall of 2024, David Meltzer became the Chairman of the Napoleon Hill Institute. Let’s pause here and offer a refresher for those who’ve heard the name or offer a kernel of knowledge for any who may be unfamiliar: Napoleon Hill was one of the country’s first self-help authors. His book, Think and Grow Rich, was one that my own dad, years ago, praised as the ultimate salesman’s reference. Because of my father’s influence it was a title that I began reading as a teen and continue to reread in the present. In fact, it’s a book that’s been read by millions through the span of several decades.

Think and Grow Rich is also a title that David Meltzer seemed to have an affinity for as he developed his approach to business and success in life. It’s a keepsake compilation that David commends often in his private coaching group. I appreciate it because it offers suggestions to help synthesize objectives toward professional success and leadership. If you invest time regularly watching and listening to David, you’re sure to hear him recommend Think and Grow Rich as one of his time-tested inspirational reads. And it’s one that still resonates with readers almost ninety years after its first printing.

Early successes…

David Meltzer has been a force in the sports and media world for a couple of decades. But to truly appreciate who he has become, I invite you to peek at his past as he describes it in his book, Connected to Goodness. (💡Pro tip: It’s a title David will send to you, for free, when requested.😉)

As he explains in Connected to Goodness, just nine months out of law school, David became a millionaire. He had a knack for sales and was able to capitalize on technology and harness the functionality of the internet. In the mid-90s, David successfully grew the market share of a global legal database company and was instrumental in its subsequent $3 billion sale. David went on to experience even more financial, entrepreneurial and personal successes including marrying his elementary-school sweetheart, Julie.

…Led to personal challenges

But as David writes in Connected to Goodness, “a pattern of self-sabotage ensued”.  At that time, David could afford expensive cars and homes; he could connect with party-hearty celebs and imbibe in recreational substances2025 SoCal Motivational Minds to Know - David Meltzer - Connected to Goodness book cover that were readily accessible. It wasn’t until his wife made it clear that the lifestyle he’d adopted didn’t work for her or their family did David set off on a course of change. That, coupled with the hard-to-hear disappointment from a close friend who told him, “I don’t like who you’re becoming,” did David heed the words. Those who cared the most about him were dismayed; their disillusion compelled him to listen. At the height of the chaos, David made a course correction that would go on to benefit tens of thousands of people who seek his advice, wise counsel and even his spiritual guidance.

Strategic partnerships offer growth opportunities and acclaim

Years later, David had an impromptu visit with the legendary sports agent Leigh Steinberg of the Leigh Steinberg Sports & Entertainment Agency (the company that inspired the Jerry Maguire film). There, he would become the agency’s COO. Six months later, he’d be promoted to its CEO and hold the position until 2010. From Steinberg, David learned the phrase, “Be kind to your future self.” It was a phrase that had a lasting impression. Today, if you watch any of David’s podcasts or other productions, you’ll likely hear him use that introspective expression.

In July of 2010, David would go on to launch Sports 1 Marketing with Warren Moon, the celebrated quarterback for the Houston Oilers and the first black quarterback inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Their mission statement was simply “Make a lot of money, help a lot of people, and have a lot of fun.” Keeping in mind that “being in business the next day” was key to their success. Together, Moon and Meltzer brought a shared vision to life.

Entrepreneurial evolution

These days, you will find David Meltzer crisscrossing the country and globetrotting through far corners of the world to share his now trademarked message: “Make a lot of money, help a lot of people, have a lot of fun”™. Through his journeys, he prioritizes being “good to your future self”.

David Meltzer’s work spans a myriad of environments—as an entrepreneur, investor and as a business coach. David has been celebrated as Variety’s Sports Humanitarian of the Year. He has also received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Recognized as one of Forbes Top 10 Keynote Speakers, this three-time bestselling author tracks what may appear a dizzying pace, but it’s one that is nothing short of inspirational. He often shares his purpose-driven pursuits through his social media channels. He documents much of his experiences for the greater good of others. Through the lens of a camera he shares impressive moments that capture his own evolution.

An in-demand executive business coach

As a participant in David’s private group coaching sessions, I’ve received David’s direct feedback. In weekly virtual gatherings, group members bring their business concerns to David seeking his suggestions during allotted chat sessions. David hosts these enlightening counseling sessions with the option to schedule longer virtual one-on-ones. The meetups provide valued access to David. When advice is heeded, the regular meetings help participants uncover incremental successes.

Through his tutelage, what struck me most was encountering an uber-successful entrepreneur who learned to prioritize spirituality. David manages to acknowledge humanity while pushing purpose through his business pursuits. Sharing that message and guiding others along their journeys has proven invaluable to many, including me.

A spiritually connected business focus

When I first discovered David, he happened to be interviewing someone I personally knew. When I think of how I stumbled into watching the interview as it happened, reminded me that there’s often a rhythm and reason to the rollout of many moments in life. And if you’re tuned in enough to recognize those moments the significance is sometimes profound.

As I watched David that first time, I was amazed how he weaved in mindfulness throughout his discussion. Up to that point, I had not heard a high-flourishing entrepreneur speak  that way. There was a genuineness about his delivery and his present-looking focus on developing spiritually, in the now, to manifest personal and professional achievements moving forward. It was refreshing to find someone expressing a similar spiritual outlook as my own, but with a keen business mindset, that elevated him as a stellar example of success. David joyfully shares his transcendent perspective and demonstrates how to use uplifted thought to impact growth in business and in life. It’s an extraordinary gift to convey that many find indispensable. And it’s one of the reasons David ranks prominently on our 2025 SoCal Spotlight Motivational Minds Worth Knowing!

When you connect with David—whether on social media or as a guest at a speaking engagement—he’s eager to share his enterprising philosophy. You’ll find him at his headquarters at SoFi Stadium, at targeted points across the country or visiting venues around the globe; ultimately, we’re grateful for his roundtrip excursions that prompt his return to his home turf in Southern California. Thank you, David, for your continued accessibility to your Southern California neighbors!

Sean Kanan, the actor

Before he became The Bold and The Beautiful’s Deacon Sharpe, Sean Kanan was the Karate Kid’s Mike Barnes. Years later, he would reprise his iconic character on the Netflix series Cobra Kai. Sean and his wife, Michele Kanan, have also created a multi-Emmy Award®-winning digital series, Studio City; Sean is both executive producer and plays the lead character, Sam Stevens. Through Sean’s film, digital series and daytime television roles from General Hospital to The Bold and the Beautiful, Sean has an established, diehard fanbase.

Sean Kanan, the author

In 2022, Sean was promoting the third title of his Way of the Cobra book series, Welcome to the Kumite. As he began promoting the book, I offered to set up a book talk in San Diego and Sean accepted. At the time, SoCal Spotlight just launching. So while helping him with his San Diego book tour, Sean helped me kick off SoCal Spotlight’s first in-studio interview. In fact, both he and Michele were generous with their time and access and agreed to be my first interview guests. That generosity of time and spirit is just one of the reasons we’ve named Sean Kanan one of our prized 2025 SoCal Spotlight Motivational Minds Worth Knowing!

As a prerequisite for the interview, Sean encouraged me to read his new book, Welcome to the Kumite from beginning to end. I took Sean’s request to heart and read his book from cover to cover prior to our interview. I’m glad I did. I got a deeper understanding of who Sean had been and was in the process of becoming. And bonus! Along the way, I stirred my own self-reflection, inspiring new ways to challenge my own perspectives. Unexpectedly, I found myself armed with tools to unstick elements of my mindset that I hadn’t been giving my full attention to.

Way of the Cobra book series

Sean’s Way of the Cobra book series is powerful. Each of the books in the trilogy— Way of the Cobra, Welcome to the Kumite and Cobra Couplesis a testament to Sean’s growth. The latest title, Cobra Couples, was a labor of love, co-authored with his wife, Michele Kanan.

I recently finished reading Cobra Couples. One of the themes of the book is the recognition and examination of a person’s origin story. This includes the stuff—whether emotional baggage or inner resilience—from previous interactions, romantic or familial, that shape a current relationship. A throughline of the book includes reinforcing an individual’s ability to adjust in a relationship. Sean and Michele make readers aware of internal and outside influences that can mold behaviors.

At the heart of each book, Sean builds a foundation of his “Five Core Pillars” derived from the acronym C-O-B-R-A (Character-Optimization-Balance-Respect-Abundance}. Thematically, Sean gives a nod to his longstanding connection to martial arts. Connecting to the value of the medium, he capitalizes on the discipline required to build from a solid footing.

The series notably emphasizes Sean’s credo, that being kind and giving the best of oneself to others is how true happiness is achieved. Embedded in that mindset is a way for individuals to open up to fulfilling one’s life-purpose.

Tapping into discipline to deliver an elevated mindset2025 SoCal motivational minds - Sean Kanan with wife Michele Kanan

Through social media, Sean has been able to cross-connect his film and television fan base with his focus on spiritual growth and personal development. He utilizes social media to encourage interaction with his fans and followers. Sean shares his journey of strength through challenges and has been rewarded time and again for his courage to bare all. Sean, with the committed help of his wife, Michele, has overcome significant obstacles that threatened to curtail his fortunate Hollywood successes.

With genuine openness, Sean invites others to grow with him through personal coaching sessions, whether assisting as an acting coach or mindset mentor. As he shares in his book, his disciplined lifestyle serves as a model of form and function. Setting an example while living the life you advocate proves useful to those sincerely seeking a headspace of clarity and intention.

Staying grounded while conquering new creative pursuits

Sean has entertained fans from film to television, with a book series and now, with a new business venture in the food space. Recently launching a condiment line called Bad Boy Hot Sauce, Sean continues to broaden his entrepreneurial boundaries. With each new pursuit, Sean stays grounded and accessible. Surely, it’s a reason he continues to be embraced and rewarded on and off camera with accolades, both as a “personality” and as an individual. Through all the glory and the twists and turns of his life, Sean often expresses gratitude and credits Michele for keeping him grounded.

2025 SoCal motivational minds - Sean Kanan headshot with 5 o'clock shadow

If you’re looking for a road map to emotional and spiritual renewal, buckle in and take a journey through Sean’s books. With plain language and well-crafted direction, Sean helps readers uncover their own path to well-being. While I wouldn’t classify Sean as an open book, Sean’s words can certainly help readers open up to greater potential, craft their own stories, while making strides toward who they’d like to become.

Fasting. For the uninitiated, the word is often a turnoff. I know from my own family that many tune out at the mere mention of electively doing without food for more than a few hours. So, applauding the virtues of a scientist and deep researcher who boasts about achieving vitality through fasting might seem unusual. Yet, here she is, Dr. Mindy Pelz, rounding out the list of our top 2025 SoCal Spotlight Motivational Minds Worth Knowing.

Why do people fast?

For holistic pursuits, some already health-focused or curious individuals seek to optimize their wellness. Others may be confronted with an ailment or chronic health condition. Often these circumstances encourage people to seek alternative treatments or inspire diet and lifestyle adjustments beyond standard medical practices. Whatever delivers a person to a lifestyle of fasting, for many, like me, the search for greater meaning to fortify fasting journeys becomes essential.

Discovering Dr. Mindy2025 SoCal motivational minds - Dr. Mindy Pelz podcast cover

During one of my online searches, at last, I stumbled upon Dr. Mindy Pelz. Delving into her YouTube channel, website and books provided me with a comprehensive breakdown of research-backed fasting rationale. Her thorough and well-organized videos, reels and podcasts are many. Watching them helped me puzzle together the bits and pieces of info I had gathered from a variety of sources. Most exciting, my media dive through Dr. Mindy’s material offered a wealth of new information, too! After years of random online explanations to find answers to my fasting questions, I discovered a single source to synthesize my fragmented understanding of fasting. With a broad review of her offerings, Dr. Mindy quickly earned my respect as an unparalleled fasting advocate.

Weekly water fasts promote wellbeing

Personally, I was drawn to fasting as a teenager but left it behind by the time I headed to college. Then years later, married with kids, I rediscovered the joy of living without food for a day or more. I uncovered that feeling of clarity, lightness of being and a general sense of wellness I once knew from years earlier. It’s a consistent culmination of my weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) 36-hour water fasts.

Years into my lifestyle of weekly fasting, I happened upon this expert. Dr. Mindy pitched a cohesive structure to the art of fasting that I could use for my own fasting ritual. She helped me wrap a systematic, intermittent approach to what I had been committed to for years. Suddenly, I discovered a foundational purpose to my weekly pursuits. With years of fasting as proof, I constructed a new precision and purpose around elements of time. Learning the body’s response to time within the fasting window gave me functional insight and enthusiastic intention.

A deep dive into fasting research

Primed and passionate fasters and those who are fasting-curious are in for a treat!  Dr. Mindy shares her infectious charm in her invaluable bestseller, Fast Like a Girl. It has become my fasting handbook. Despite my years in the fasting trenches, the book has fine-tuned and clarified my fasting process, and importantly my fasting purpose.

Dr. Mindy offers a masterclass with the info she lays out in her text. Through her well researched work, my intuitive presumptions were confirmed: I was doing something wildly beneficial for my body through regular fasting!

Prior to Dr. Mindy, the stuff I gleaned online didn’t connect in an orderly way. My patchwork understanding was marginally helpful. Discovering Dr. Mindy’s website, videos and text wrapped my interpretations into an entire quilt. Her book was the needle that stitched together the pieces of knowledge I gathered along the way. Suddenly I had fewer gaps in my understanding. Fast Like a Girl became my singular fasting reference when questions came to mind. Strategies to maximize benefits earned within the fasting window, and outside of it, could now be my focus.

Dr. Mindy Pelz’s work substantiates beliefs that I’ve held for years: I’ve long believed that the body is built to heal itself. But sensing that truth and being armed with the facts to back it up are two separately significant things.

An advocate for women

With a plethora of motivational, evidence-backed, plain-speaking videos in her arsenal, Dr. Mindy makes her mission clear: She wants people, especially women, to recognize the power of their bodies to heal. Her advocacy around fasting is useful for men, too! However, her message skews toward healing the hormonal microbiome and maximizing the health markers and function of the female physique.

Dr. Mindy’s fasting protocol equates to an effective tool for women. It assists in struggles with yo-yo dieting, years of taking the pill, and making poor dietary choices. In a non-critical and helpful manner, she addresses common female scenarios. Often, women are oblivious to the ways their bodies are affected by food choices and environment. Dr. Mindy praises the benefits of fasting to help correct chronic conditions and ailments. These often result from an individual’s nutritional (and non-nutritious) dietary history. Dr. Mindy’s work is exceptional. It includes invaluable research connecting fasting to female physiology and hormonal cycles. Armed with that knowledge, she helps women craft personalized fasting protocols and eating strategies to boost their success.

2025 SoCal motivational minds - Women's hands holding up glasses of water

Dr. Mindy employs strategies from a biological perspective. She reveals ways women can utilize their cycles to maximize hormonal and cyclical changes. Her strategies benefit women’s bodies, minds and emotional wellbeing. In addition, as women reach perimenopause and menopause, some strategies need to be tweaked. Through these major life transitions, she guides women through intermittent fasting strategies to alleviate problematic symptoms.

Dr. Mindy helps women optimize their health

With uncommon enthusiasm, from a science-centric approach, Dr. Mindy seems to be on a mission. With a contagious excitement,  she espouses the wonders of fasting. All the while, Dr. Mindy makes it clear that she wants people to achieve true health. She helps women navigate physiological and emotional shifts. She connects fasting to our biologic processes, human evolution and the days of our hunter gatherer ancestors.

Dr. Mindy’s patients learn to capitalize on their inherited, biological makeup. A fasting framework—combined with eating the right types of food at the right time—creates a dynamic healthful regimen. Establishing a healthy constitution allows the body to perform vital and instinctual functions to heal and optimize health.
