If you haven’t heard yet, it’s official. Sprinkles is no longer raining down its sugary and stylish treats with its iconic single dot presentation.

Since its opening in Beverly Hills in 2005, Sprinkles Cupcakes has been a hit! The Sprinkles founder, Candace Nelson, who sold the company in 2012 says, “It was surreal to see this chapter come to a close.”

Sudden sugar shock

The shuttering of multiple locations with no official announcement or explanation from the subsequent owners, equity firm KarpReilly LLC, caught many Sprinkles regulars off guard and deeply disappointed. When asked to comment, groans and moans could be heard outside locked and boarded up doors. Lamentations like, “End of an era,” “I’m speechless,” and a confession from a couple of high school best friends who had planned a special LA road trip—destination Sprinkles—represent the outsized influence the trendsetting bakery brand wielded.

Former SoCal locations

Sprinkles operated locations in Los Angeles County in Beverly Hills, Downtown LA, The Grove and Manhattan Beach. Orange County locations included bakeries in Irvine and Newport Beach. Plus San Diego County boasted a single, popular shop in La Jolla. So the New Year’s Eve closing landed with an uncharacteristically sour note for one of the best sweet treats across the region.

Nationwide ripple

The sudden closure of all locations caught managers and employees by surprise. With less than a days notice, its 20-company-owned stores, plus 25-cupcake ATMs closed without warning. Beyond California, Sprinkles operated in Arizona, Utah, Texas, Nevada, DC and Florida, so the disappointment is countrywide and even left the boutique cupcake shop’s founder crestfallen.

As Nelson said, “This isn’t how I thought the story would go. I thought it was going to be my legacy.”
